01.

Horton Plains

This Park & the adjoining Peak Wilderness form the most important catchment area for almost all the major rivers in the country. Three major rivers originate from within the park itself. This is the highest plateau of the country, being above 5,000 feet and the western slopes of the park support the most extensive area of montane cloud forests surviving in the country. The most popular spot is the World’s End which is a vertical drop of 884m. The walk takes through pristine hill bird habitat.

Sinharaja Rain Forest

Sinharaja Rain Forest is a World Heritage site with it’s flowing rivers and silent streamlets cover up nearly 9800 hectares. Out of the total of 830 indigenous flowering plants in the island, Sinharaja houses nearly 500 plants. Also it’s a paradise for bird watchers. Sinharaja lies within a rainfall range of 3,000 to 6,000 millimeters. The present reserve occupies a narrow strip of land 21 km in length and 3.7km in width, covering 11187ha of undisturbed and logged forest, scrub and fern land.

Wilpattu National Park

Located close to Anuradhapura, Wilpattu is one of the most important and oldest protected areas in Sri Lanka. Wilpattu has over 30 species of mammalian wildlife including elephant, leopard, sloth bear, water buffalo and deer.

Kaudulla National Park

Located close to Sigiriya, forms a corridor for elephants migrating between Somawathiya  National park and Minneriya National Park. Very popular place for elephant lovers, as large herds could be observed close by. Leopards, deer and sometimes the bear can be watched. Ideal location for bird watching.

Minneriya National Park

Minneriya National Park is 20 kms North West of Polonnaruwa. The core of this National park is in an inhabited area within one of the country’s most diverse natural systems, with intermediate forest, bambo0 stands, patanas & talawas. Nowhere else does such diversity seem to occur within a single protected area, particularly in such an intact  state.

Bundala National Park

This is the first Ramsar site declared in Sri Lanka and it is the most important wetland for birds outside the Northern Province. The park’s lagoons are amongst the most important wintering areas for migratory shore birds in the country, regularly accommodating over 15, 000 of them at any one time.

Uda Walawe National Park

Lies on the boundary of Sabaragamuwa & Uva Provinces of Sri Lanka  & was created to provide a sanctuary for wild animals displaced by the construction of the uda Walawe reservoir on the Walawe river as well as to protect the catchment of the reservoir.  It’s renowned for it’s outstanding scenic beauty and wealth of animal and bird species. Elephants could be observed at close range at Elephant Transit Home. 39 species of mammals & 183 species of birds have been recorded.

Yala National Park

Yala National park is the most visited and the 2nd largest national park in Sri Lanka. Yala hosts a variety of ecosystems ranging from moist monsoon forests to freshwater and marine wetlands. 215 species of birds are recorded in Yala with 6 species of endemic birds. 44 species of mammals are resident at Yala. The elephant population varies seasonally. Some of the Mammals found at Yala are the Sloth Bear, Leopard & Wils water buffalo.

Wasgamuwa National Park

Wasgamuwa has the highest biodiversity among the protected  areas in Sri Lanka. It is home for 23 species of mammals. Two of the monkey species found in the park is endemic. They are purple faced languor & Toque Macaque. There are over 17 species of reptiles, 5 species are endemic. Rare Sri Lanka Frogmouth is seen here.

Kumana National Park

Kumana is one of the most important bird nesting and breeding grounds in Sri Lanka.  255 species of birds are recorded in the park. During April & July tens of thousands of birds migrate to Kumana swamp annually. Pintail snipes migrate here flying 9000 to 11000 kilometers from Siberia.  A mammal such as Golden Jackal, Wild Boar, European Otter & fishing cat also visits the park. The water bodies & mangroves of Kumana provide particularly a very important habitat for birds.
